Everyone needs someone to talk with at times. Counseling is a growth process through which students are helped to define goals, make decisions, and solve problems related to personal, social, academic, and career concerns. All of our services are available to currently enrolled students at Morgan State University.
Individual counseling offers the opportunity to talk privately with a trained professional about whatever is on your mind and to explore your options. A psychologist or professional counselor can help you resolve personal difficulties and learn more about yourself. Counseling helps students to resolve personal and educational concerns, which may include:
Walk In Consultations
Students may come to the Counseling Center for a brief consultation, for the first time or in a crisis, during our Walk In hours, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday. If their concerns are not resolved during the Walk In session, the student may elect to schedule an intake appointment with an available provider. Sometimes, the student will be referred off campus or to another campus department for help with their concerns.
A student officially becomes a client of the MSU Counseling Center after completing a scheduled intake appointment. Walk in sessions are considered consultations rather than counseling or therapy. While rules of confidentiality apply to consultations, such contact with a provider is not considered to be part of any treatment or ongoing relationship.
Groups provide a safe environment in which you can experiment with new behaviors, improve communication skills, and receive feedback from other students with similar concerns, experiences and interests. One of the most valuable aspects of participating in a group is learning that you are not alone. The Counseling Center has an extensive Group Program with updated offerings each semester. Some groups focus on specific skills and themes while others provide support for specific groups of students. Some of the groups offered by the Counseling Center require that you complete an initial intake session with one of the group leaders in order to carefully assess appropriateness of the group for your needs. Other groups are considered "drop-in groups" and have no requirements for participation beyond current registration as an MSU student.

Is anger hurting you and those around you? Angry feelings are a normal reaction that can be either harmful or helpful when expressed. In a safe, supportive environment this group will explore what activates anger and effective ways to communicate as well as manage anger. Additionally, participants will identify how they mask other feelings with anger and develop new ways to respond to emotional triggers in relationships.
BUILDING SOCIAL CONFIDENCE
Do you feel uncomfortable in social situations? Does shyness interfere with your ability to enjoy your life? Does discomfort stop you from performing your best in class? Do you avoid situations where you feel judged by others? This group will help you learn and practice skills to build your social confidence.
COMING OUT AND BEYOND: LGBTQ SUPPORT GROUP
A confidential support group for LGBT students anywhere in the coming out process. The group will provide a non-judgmental environment to discuss challenges regarding sexual orientation and gender identity and integrating these into many facets of one's life; a place to explore how to deal with social issues related to coming out in various contexts. This group is open to new and returning members.
This is a drop-in support group for international students and for students with multiple ethnic identities (including children of immigrant parents). The group will discuss identity, communication and cultural differences, homesickness, stereotypes, and other challenges--and advantages--faced by students from different cultures.
MEN OF POWER
This is a workshop/discussion series for men to look at their goals, relationships, spirituality and anger management. The purpose of the series is personal empowerment and self awareness.
MOOD MANAGEMENT through MINDFULNESS MEDITATION
Are you prone to depression or anxiety? Do you want some practical help in the company of others who want to increase their emotional resilience? This group will include discussion, mutual encouragement, mindfulness practice and homework.
SINGLE PARENTS' SUPPORT GROUP
This group is for students who are single parents. The purpose of the group is to empower students to enhance personal growth and self-confidence, promote health and well-being, share experiences, and to gain skills of parenting.
SISTER TO SISTER
This is a workshop series for women of the African Diaspora to explore and discuss issues that may affect them. The series is designed to offer a forum in a safe environment to increase healthy interactions with others and facilitate a healthy journey of self discovery.
