Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation

The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program is an alliance-based program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The overall goal of the program is to assist universities and colleges in diversifying the nation's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce by increasing the number of STEM baccalaureate and graduate degrees awarded to populations historically underrepresented in these disciplines.

The overall goals of LSAMP are to significantly increase the quality and quantity of underrepresented students who successfully complete baccalaureate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), along with increasing the number of underrepresented students who successfully enter and complete graduate programs. More specifically, the program aims to provide STEM students with the opportunity to conduct research on campus with a research mentor affording them a continuous research experience for 2-3 years which will make them more competitive for graduate school admission.

LSAMP Summer Research Program Overview

This program is designed to provide financial assistance to full-time MSU science, engineering, and mathematics (SEM) undergraduate students. SEM students are those majoring in biology, medical technology, chemistry, physics, engineering physics, computer science, mathematics, civil engineering, electrical engineering, transportation systems, and industrial engineering.

The goals of the program are to:

  • Provide financial assistance to students
  • Eliminate or reduce the need for students to work off-campus
  • Introduce students to research
  • Provide mentoring relationships for students

Awards are based on students' academic performance, financial need, and the availability of funds. In exchange for the financial awards, students must provide service to MSU on a weekly basis. They will be assigned to a:
