Dina El Mahdy is an associate professor (with tenure) of accounting at Morgan State University since May 2016. Prior to joining Morgan State University, El Mahdy obtained her PhD in Accounting with a minor in finance from Virginia Commonwealth University in May 2011, a M.Sc. in Accounting in 2004 and B. Com. (Valedictorian, Honor) in 1997 from Cairo University where she was competitively hired as a tenure-track assistant instructor out of a pool of over 12,000 students. El Mahdy has more than 21 years of teaching experience in the USA and overseas to both undergraduate and graduate accounting students. She taught various levels of Financial Accounting & Reporting courses at Georgetown University, American University, Virginia Commonwealth University and Cairo University. Her publications have appeared in Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, International Journal of Accounting and Information Management, Journal of Forensic Studies in Accounting and Business, Journal of Accounting, Ethics and Public Policy, and Journal of Accounting and Finance. She is the author of a Corporate Governance Research Book entitled: Corporate Governance and the U.S. Firm: A Review and Directions for Future Research. El Mahdy's research interests are focusing on earnings management, information asymmetry, internal control quality, corporate governance, blockchains and information technology, and syndicated lending. El Mahdy has been on the executive boards of various NGOs, as a treasurer and vice president of finance, such as: the Graduate Student Association (GSA) at Virginia Commonwealth University, Congress of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at Lutherville Laboratory Elementary School, the Egyptian Student Association in North America (ESANA) and Karina Association. She is a certified advanced tax preparer and has been a member of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) team with the CASH Campaign of Maryland since November 2017. She volunteered in the past as a site manager at Morgan State University where she received an Award of Excellence for the biggest increase in tax returns  preparation and currently is volunteering as a site manager in a new VITA tax site at Loyola University.
