Fall Hall Closing Frequently Asked Questions

FALL 2022
CHECK-OUT FAQs

Q:  Do I have to take all of my stuff?
A:
NO, however it is strongly encouraged that you remove all belongings from your room when checking out.  If you must leave belongings behind, you must complete the necessary form (Release of Liability Waiver) and everything must be locked up and secured in your wardrobe/closet – no exceptions.

Q: I’m graduating, what do I do?
A: CONGRATULATIONS! You must complete a Housing Contract Release Form via the online Housing Portal, followed by signing up for a check-out time with your respective RA. Prior to checking out, your side of the room must be clean and clear of all belongings.

Q: I’m an athlete and returning early, can I keep my key?
A: NO!  You must surrender your key to your respective RA upon room inspection; failure to do so will result in you receiving an improper check-out and core placement charge to your student account.  A time will be arranged with the RD and your Coach as to what time you are allowed to check-in on your return date.

Q: I’m returning for mini-mester, can I keep my key?
A: THERE WILL BE NO MINI-MESTER HOUSING THIS WINTER.  Failure to return your key will result in you receiving an improper check-out and core placement charge to your student account.

Q: When I sign up for a check-out time, after the RA takes my keys can I remain in the suite/room if waiting for a ride?
A: For all apartment style housing and Thurgood Marshall (students in suites), once your key is returned, you must leave the suite immediately.  For all other traditional buildings, once checked out, you are instructed to wait in the lobby of your building for your ride.

Q: What happens if I don’t return a key?
A: Your RA will document this on your RCF during your check-out and a key request will be submitted for you.  Your account will be billed and flagged for improperly checking out. A key replacement charge will be placed on your student account. Your suitemates/roommates will need to retrieve their new issued keys upon arriving for the spring semester.

Q: Will I be billed for things that were damaged when I checked in?
A: Before you checked into your suite/room, all preexisting room issues were formally documented on your RCF. Therefore, you will only be charged for new damages.

Q: Will anyone have access to my room during the break?
A: YES, it is possible that the maintenance staff may enter a room to address room maintenance issues.  The housekeeping staff may enter to prepare a space for a newly assigned student, and if a situation presents itself that warrants entry into a suite (i.e.: smoke detector sounding, power outage, etc.), university officials may require room access.

Q: When can I return for the spring?
A: January 14, 2023.  If not returned and checked in by the first day of classes, your room will be reassigned, any remaining property will be discarded, and all fees and charges will apply.

Q: What is an improper check-out?
A: If you fail to sign up for a check-out time, if you miss your check-out time, if you fail to leave without being cleared by your RA, if you fail to return your key at the time of check-out, if you are checked out by another RA who is not assigned to your area, if you leave belongings behind without the proper documentation, and/or if you have failed to clean your area.

Q: Does anything need to be unplugged?
A: YES, you must unplug everything.

Q: My roommate moved out during the semester, will I get a replacement in the spring?
A: YES, it is likely that you will have a roommate for the spring semester.  Please be sure that the vacant side of the room is clean and clear prior to your departure.

Q: I cannot leave until after December 15th, how do I resolve this concern?
A: If faced with this challenge, please speak to your Resident Director to further discuss this matter.

Q: What if an emergency arises and I need to return to campus before January 14th?
A: Returning to campus early should be your last resort. It is highly encouraged that you check with friends, family and neighbors for housing accommodations.  A daily housing fee of $25.00 will be assessed, and must be paid in full before you are permitted to check- in, if you’re required to return early.

Q: I have a lot of stuff, can I pull up to the front of the building?
A: For Thurgood Marshall, NO you may NOT drive your vehicle into the Complex.  For the other residence halls, please have ALL belongings out of the room and downstairs for a swift departure.  Being parked in front of any building for an extensive period of time will cause traffic jams and may result in ticketing and/or towing.
