Shear Turbulence Resuspension Mesocosm

Shear Turbulence Resuspension Mesocosm (STURM) facility, a University of Baltimore Resuspension Facility at PEARL. Dr. Elka T. Porter (University of Baltimore), Lawrence P. Sanford (Horn Point Laboratory, UMCES) and Robert P. Mason (University of Connecticut) developed the STURM tank as a 1 m3 cylindrical tank with high instantaneous bottom shear stress and realistic water column mixing in a single system. The current setup of six STURM systems at PEARL can be programmed to produce tidal or periodic sediment resuspension over extended time periods (e.g. 4 weeks) for benthic-pelagic coupling experiments to address a wide range of scientific questions.
