The Leadership Alliance

To Train. To Mentor. To Inspire.

The Leadership Alliance was founded at Brown University in 1992 as a partnership of 23 institutions working committed to developing underrepresented students into outstanding leaders and role models in academia, business, and the public sector. Today, this consortium has grown to more than 30 partners and has provided research, mentoring, and networking experiences to over 4,000 scholars. The Leadership Alliance (TLA) uses a time-tested model to leverage its collective resources to address the shortage of individuals from historically underrepresented groups in doctoral training programs, academia, and the broader research workforce.

Morgan State University is a member institution within TLA, and Dr. Lisa. D. Brown is our institutional coordinator. There are many benefits to engaging with TLA, so explore the additional links to learn more. We also highly encourage you to join TLA Connect. TLA Connect is one of the ways TLA demonstrates community. It serves as an online mentoring and networking platform, where job opportunities, fellowship, and programmatic announcements are shared and mentoring relationships are formed.

TLA Opportunities

TLA Opportunities

From Scholarship to Leadership

Opportunities for training and mentoring begin with undergraduates during the academic year with our Academic Year Workshop program, through which students are exposed to research careers, opportunities for research experiences, and the core skills for forming collaborative learning groups. Opportunities continue during the summer with the First-Year Research Experience (FYRE) program, which enables first-year students from our member minority-serving institutions to conduct research during the Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP). SR-EIP participants present their research at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium (LANS).

Select Programs

Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP): a fully paid summer internship that provides undergraduates with training and mentoring in the principles underlying the conduct of research and prepares them to pursue competitive applications to PhD or MD-PhD programs

First Year Research Experience (FYRE): research opportunity for students who have just completed their first year at one of our minority-serving partner institutions. Students who are recommended for the FYRE program by faculty mentors are eligible to apply.

Academic Year Workshops: year-round programming that puts students in a position to build key skills for use in classroom and research settings

Virtual Professional Development: series that offers all students the opportunity to participate in high-quality professional development activities on a virtual platform

Leadership Alliance National Symposium: national networking conference that offers skill-building, networking, and professional development opportunities for undergraduates
