National Award Recognizes Achievement, Leadership, and Service in Support of Organization’s Mission to Expand Opportunities in STEM

Clarence M. Mitchell Jr. School of Engineering (SOE) student Aaron Providence has been recognized as one of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Top 25 Engineers under 25, an honor awarded by one of the largest student-led organizations in the United States. As a member of the award’s first-ever cohort, Providence was recognized by NSBE for his exceptional contributions to engineering, service, and student leadership on campus and within the community.

Representing the next generation of engineers, Providence, a junior year civil engineering major, aspires to become a project manager. He is committed to expanding diversity in STEM and creating pathways for underrepresented students. On campus, he was elected as Mister School of Engineering and serves as president of the organization Strong Men Overcoming Obstacles Through Hard Work, or S.M.O.O.T.H., a nonprofit mentorship organization for young men. In addition to his on-campus volunteer activities, Providence has interned with Mortenson and Turner Construction, contributing to major data center and renewable energy projects.

This honor is reserved for exceptional students and young professionals under the age of 25 who have demonstrated measurable impact, exemplary leadership, and sustained excellence across STEM disciplines, innovation, research, entrepreneurship, and community advancement.

“This recognition is empowering as I continue my academic journey and deepen my commitment to expanding opportunities in STEM and increasing the number of responsible, successful Black engineers who make a positive impact in their communities,” said Providence. “I am looking forward to continuing this work.”

The National Society of Black Engineers has over 700 chapters and more than 24,000 members worldwide. For over 50 years, NSBE has played a vital role in fostering innovation, supporting corporate leaders, guiding countless engineers to graduation, and advancing STEM education for many K–12 students globally.

Congratulations to Aaron Providence for upholding the highest standards of safety and service on a journey to academic completion and career success.
