Morgan State University Faculty Member Delivers Keynote at United Nations for Inaugural International Wellness Day
Global Observance Highlights Holistic Health as a Cornerstone of Sustainable Development and Human Well-Being
Morgan State University continues to expand its global footprint as one of its distinguished faculty members took center stage at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City for the inaugural observance of International Wellness Day.
Observed for the first time on April 15, 2026, International Wellness Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to promote holistic, accessible, and affordable approaches to physical and mental health. Initiated by the nation of Nepal, the global observance underscores the connection between wellness, peace, prosperity, and sustainability, while encouraging preventive, lifestyle-based practices to address rising non-communicable diseases worldwide.
Representing Morgan, Benjamin Welsh, Ph.D., associate professor in the School of Education and Urban Studies, delivered a keynote address during the landmark event. His invitation reflects his growing influence in advancing scholarship at the intersection of wellness, innovation, and global engagement.
In his remarks, Dr. Welsh emphasized the importance of integrating wellness into education, public policy, and community development. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives, he called for a more comprehensive approach to well-being—one that bridges research, practice, and policy while addressing disparities in access to health resources across the globe.
The inaugural celebration brought together diplomats, scholars, and global leaders to elevate the message that “health is wealth,” highlighting the importance of community-centered, sustainable wellness practices such as mindfulness, physical activity, and stress reduction. The event also served as a platform for cultural exchange and knowledge-sharing, reinforcing the role of preventive care in improving quality of life worldwide.
Dr. Welsh’s keynote reflected themes central to his broader work as an ethno-economist, including the role of education and innovation in fostering healthier communities and the need for cross-sector partnerships to address complex global challenges.
“This historic moment underscores the critical role that institutions like Morgan State University play in shaping global conversations,” said Uttam Gaulee, Ph.D., Morgan faculty member and president of the STAR Scholars Network. “Dr. Welsh’s presence at the United Nations reflects not only his individual excellence but also Morgan’s commitment to advancing research and leadership that serves humanity.”
The observance of International Wellness Day marks the first official international recognition of wellness as a key pillar of sustainable development. As nations around the world adopt this new global initiative, Morgan State University stands at the forefront—contributing thought leadership and academic expertise to a movement aimed at improving lives across communities and continents.
Dr. Welsh’s participation reinforces Morgan’s growing international impact and its mission to lead with purpose, innovation, and a commitment to equity in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.
