Master of Science in Project Management


The MSPM program is targeted towards working professionals who seek to advance existing competencies, as well as students entering the workforce. This program facilitates working professionals to continue in their jobs while completing their degree. The majority of our faculty are working professionals and leaders in the field. Hence, the theory is applied continuously to real-world scenarios, enabling students to bridge the gap between theory and practice in all courses.

The MS in Project Management is accredited by the PMI Global Accreditation Center for Project Management Education Programs (GAC). The program is also accredited by AACSB.

The Master of Science in Project Management (MSPM) degree program is an interdisciplinary, 30-credit graduate program that provides a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of project management theory and practice. The objective of this program is to provide students with the technical and soft skills to excel in challenging work environments. This program helps to meet the industry demand for project managers who are needed to improve project performance. The program integrates courses in project management, business, city & regional planning, engineering, information technology, liberal arts, sciences, social sciences, transportation, and several other disciplines to offer a rich educational experience. Project management professionals can advance in their careers in the private and public sectors. It also provides a career change path for working professionals. The program provides all the features of a full-time program on a convenient year-round evening and weekend schedule. We follow the Project Management Institute (PMI) standards and use the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) extensively in our project management courses.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to have a bachelor's degree from an accredited university, at least two years of professional-level work experience (internships do not count), and meet the MSU Graduate School admission requirements.


The program requires the completion of 30 credits hours and a comprehensive examination. A current PMP or CAPM certification waives the comprehensive examination requirement. Program participants are expected to complete courses as a cohort. Full-time students can expect to complete the program in two years.

Five core courses include:

  • *PROJ 600: Foundations in Project, Program, and Portfolio Management
  • PROJ 650: Project Integration and Scope Management
  • PROJ 655: Building and Leading Successful Project Teams
  • PROJ 660: Project Time and Cost Management
  • PROJ 670: Managing Project Procurement, Quality, and Risk

Furthermore, students are required to take one Project Management elective, three graduate school electives from any discipline with prior approval from the advisor, as well as the capstone course (PROJ.690):

  • PROJ.690: Project Management Application (Capstone course)^

In the MSPM program, students must take five required project management courses, one capstone course, one project management elective, and three graduate school electives. We use the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) extensively in our project management courses. The three permissible graduate school elective courses are to be taken from other disciplines according to the student's educational background and/or experiences, or interests. These 3 courses are from a listing of over 60 courses to integrate project management skills in a specific subject area from Architecture; The Arts; Business; City and Regional Planning; Civil Engineering; Computer Science; Electrical Engineering; Industrial Engineering; Information Technology; Science; Transportation; and other disciplines of interest to the students.

In each course, student assignments assess a student's mastery of the course-specific learning outcomes. These courses are designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of all knowledge areas of project management and to prepare them for success in the program's capstone course. In the capstone course, the students apply the ten knowledge areas to complete their capstone project. Students use project management skills to create, edit, and deliver a project management magazine (PM Magazine) that contains a theme and obtain articles that relate to the concept/theme of the magazine. They also develop an integrated project management plan before creating and delivering the project management magazine.

Learning Outcomes

The program learning outcomes of the MSPM program are:

1. Demonstrate working knowledge of project management terminology, techniques, and analysis.

2. Integrate PMI's Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) knowledge areas.

3. Demonstrate the ability to develop a project management plan.

4. Develop strategies for a project team and stakeholder management.

5. Apply project management knowledge and skills to a real-life project.


Students with a range of professional experience are candidates for the program. These include recent college graduates with at least two years of professional experience to graduates with ten to fifteen years of work experience. We attract students from a variety of industries including, information technology, construction, finance, insurance, engineering, sciences, government, and non-profit, amongst others.

Our student body typically ranges in age from mid-20s to late-50s, representing a diverse population of domestic, as well as international students. The MSPM program attracts students from the Mid-Atlantic region (especially from Maryland, Washington DC, New Jersey, Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania), and international students from the Caribbean Islands (especially Jamaica, Trinidad, and Tobago, Guyana), and African countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Liberia. While some U.S. based students are working full-time or part-time, many international students are non-working full-time students.
