What does it look like when universities move beyond talking about AI and start working through the real questions together?

That was at the center of a recent visit to Morgan State University by colleagues from UMBC, along with representatives from the local community and Maryland higher education. The conversation focused on how institutions can approach AI with stronger governance, clearer accountability, and a continued emphasis on human judgment.

Morgan shared its evolving AI ecosystem, including the infrastructure, research, and governance models shaping the University’s broader digital transformation. The approach is closely tied to Transformation 2030 and emphasizes institutional ownership, responsible use, and human oversight.

The group also explored Morgan’s Urban Intelligence Corridor, where faculty and students are advancing work in smart infrastructure, digital twins, mobility, and trusted autonomy. The corridor offers a living environment for research, experimentation, and student learning.

The visit also surfaced several areas for future collaboration between Morgan and UMBC, including shared AI assurance capabilities, joint research in trusted autonomy and cyber-physical systems, and stronger pathways for students and researchers working across AI development and evaluation.

For Morgan, these conversations are part of a broader effort to build thoughtful, responsible approaches to emerging technology and to strengthen collaboration across Maryland higher education.
