Tips for Good Interviewing


1.        BE PUNCTUAL - It is best to arrive at least ten minutes earlier than the scheduled interview.


a.    Offer a firm handshake

b.    Look the interviewer in the eye

c.    Remember the name of interviewer (which includes the correct pronunciation of the interviewer’s name) and those to whom you are introduced to within the department you’ve applied for

3.        SMOKING prior to the interview and/or CHEWING GUM presents a negative image.

4.        WATCH YOUR NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION – Pay attention to your physical posture.

5.        Be FLEXIBLE and WILLING to give the interviewer a clear idea of your job preferences.

6.        DO NOT BE EMBARASSED BY NERVOUSNESS – Interviewers are human and are probably nervous as well.

7.        BE PREPARED FOR PERSONAL QUESTIONS, EVEN SOME THAT MAY SEEM INAPPROPRIATE – Anticipate how you will handle personal questions without blowing your cool.

8.        Be ARTICULATE about yourself, your interests, and what you feel qualified to do.

9.        Ask QUESTIONS about the job, employee responsibilities, hours, etc….

10.     DO NOT INTERRUPT THE INTERVIEWER – A few interruptions are natural, but keep them to a minimum

11.     AVOID DEBATE – Arguing affects your chances of employment.

12.     NEVER SLIGHT A FORMER EMPLOYER – If there were problems with a previous employer, try to put your answer in the positive rather than the negative.

13.     IF YOU CATCH YOURSELF MAKING AN ERROR OR CONTRADICTION, CORRECT YOURSELF – It is better to stumble than to get caught later.

14.     TRY TO BE AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE – Never say, “I’ll do anything!”  Take charge of your own life or someone else will take charge of it for you.

15.     WATCH YOUR GRAMMAR – Employers are interested in candidates who can express themselves properly.

16.     RELAX!!!! - An interview can be interesting and fun!!!

17.     BE YOURSELF – You do not want to get hired on the basis of someone you are not.

18.     THANK the interviewer.  Establish what the next step is, i.e. will they contact you, contact them, and when?
