Walk-ins (students without appointments) are seen on a "first
come, first serve basis". Students are evaluated by the nurse and based
upon the severity of illness, as determined by the nurse, are either seen
immediately by a provider; given an appointment for a later time or referred
to a specialist or hospital. Students with scheduled appointments have
priority over walk-ins, unless there is a life-threatening emergency.
Prescriptions are filled for all
full-time undergraduate, part-time and graduate students enrolled in the
student health insurance plan, at no cost to students, in the University
Health Center when the medication written is in the Health Center's formulary.
If the prescription is not available in the Health Center's formulary,
a prescription will be written for the student to have filled at an outside
pharmacy. For those students who are given a written prescription, please
note that the limit of coverage is $100.00, per illness. The student will
be required to pay for the prescription "out of pocket". Receipts
may be brought to the University Health Center for submission or sent
directly to the student health insurance for reimbursement.
Students who are covered
under student health insurance are first evaluated in the University Health
Center. The University Health Center serves as the primary care provider
for all student enrolled in the student insurance plan. Thus, the University
Health Center, after evaluation/examination will determine the student's
need for a specialist. If it is determined that the student requires a
specialist, a referral with appointment, date and time will be generated
and given to the student. Specialists are provided through the student
health insurance from the Alliance PPO Network. Students are required
to notify the University Health Center, of any further appointments with
the specialist. A consultation note will be required before any other
visits are authorized by the University Health Center.
In most instances, these providers accept the limits
of coverage provided by the student health insurance. It is important
to note that the student health insurance provides limited coverage and
some services may not covered under the student insurance plan.
The Health Center will only
do STD testing if a student presents with symptoms of a given STD. If
Student is asymptomatic and wishes STD testing they are then referred
to the Baltimore City Health Department where STD testing is provided
free of charge. Brochures with this information are available at the health
center or at the Baltimore
City Health Department.
HIV/AIDS testing is available free and anonymous in the Wellness Center.
