I only have an undergraduate degree. Am I eligible for admission to the Master of Social Work (MSW) program?
Persons without an undergraduate degree in social work are welcome to apply to program, however without the undergraduate foundational knowledge that can come from the a BSW program it will be important for students to acquire some additional information regarding the history, and initial social work practices and processes. Please refer to the MSW handbook to access additional information regarding course offerings and requirements.
What are the requirements to apply to the MSW program?
To apply to the MSW program, one must submit an application including statement of interest, three recommendation letters, along with undergraduate transcripts to the office of Graduate studies.
How many credit hours is the MSW program and how long does it take to complete?
The MSW program requires completion of 60 credit hours; as a full-time student this can be attained within 2 years, as a part-time student the time will be extended depending upon completion of field placement hours.
What are the requirements to apply to the Advanced Standing MSW program
The requirements of the Advanced standing in the MSW program are a BSW attained from an accredited social work program within the last three years. If you have attained a BSW prior you may still be eligible for advanced standing by testing out of the 1st year 1 semester courses.
If I apply and am accepted, can I defer my enrollment?
You may request an enrollment deferral for one year by submitting a statement to the admissions office requesting the deferral and the reasons for the deferral. Approval of a deferral is generally at the discretion of the department and is not guaranteed.
What test scores are required and what are the minimum test score requirements?
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required.
How will I finance my education at the School of Social Work?
Financial Aid in the School of Social Work can come from a variety of sources. Some departments have training grants offering students full tuition plus a stipend. Through need- and merit-based programs, other students are offered grants that range from half to full tuition. To supplement other aid, many students borrow through one or more of the federal educational loan programs and work at part-time jobs at Morgan and in the community. Eligibility for most financial aid requires U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.
How do I apply for financial aid?
Financial Aid applications can be obtained by visiting the Student Financial Services web site http://www.morgan.edu/finaid. If at any time you are unable to access the web site, please call the Office of Student Financial Services at 443-885-3000.
How do I apply to Morgan State University School of Social Work?
The deadline for applicants desiring priority consideration for financial aid and scholarships is February 1; otherwise the admission deadline is June 1, 2011. Students are only admitted in the fall semester. You can apply online by visiting http://morgan.edu/Admissions.html and selecting "Grads Apply Now." Paper applications are available upon request, but limited amounts are available for distribution. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply online unless unable to access the Internet. Previous applicants have commented on the efficiency and ease of use of the online application.
