Pre-professional Overview

General Timeline for MSU Students Applying to Medical, Dental, Pharmacy School


Freshman Year
 Select the appropriate courses in biology and chemistry
 Keep grades up
 Attend/Complete all Freshman Pre-health Workshops and at minimum two (2) individual meetings with the pre-health adviser
 Ensure you are added to the Pre-professional Google Group
 Check email daily for messages and reminders from the Pre-professional Program
 Meet with medical, dental, pharmacy etc. school recruiters who visit MSU
 Take the My Plan Career Assessment
 Explore opportunities to apply for pre-health summer enrichment or research programs*

Sophomore Year
 Keep grades up
 Attend/Complete two (2) Sophomore Pre-health Workshops and at minimum (2) individual meetings with a premedical adviser
 Consider applying to early acceptance programs
 Check email daily for important messages and reminders from the Pre-professional Program
 Meet with medical, dental, pharmacy etc. school recruiters who visit MSU
 Enhance critical thinking skills in preparation for MCAT, DAT, PCAT
 Engage in research/apply to summer enrichment or research programs*

Junior Year
 Keep grades up
 Attend three (3) one-one-one meetings with your Pre-health Adviser in preparation for application to medical, dental, etc. school
 Enroll in discounted, on-campus Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) test preparation course in Fall of your first semester junior year
 Take the MCAT / DAT / PCAT or similar test in Spring of junior year
 Meet with medical, dental, etc. school recruiters who visit MSU
 Finalize medical, dental, etc. school application components
 Research/Apply to summer enrichment or research programs*

Summer after Junior Year
 Check email daily for medical, dental, etc. school application advising
 Start working on medical, dental, etc. school applications to submit in July

Senior Year
 Keep grades up
 Complete medical, dental, etc. school secondary or supplemental applications
 Prepare for medical, dental, pharmacy school interviews
 Attend one-on-one Senior Exit Meeting
 Meet with medical, dental, pharmacy school recruiters who visit MSU
 Prepare for graduation!!!
 Matriculate to Medical, Pharmacy or Dental School

*PPP encourages students interested in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy to attend at least one summer enrichment or research program before APPLYING to health professions school; additionally, clinically-related paid or volunteer work is also encouraged (as time permits) in an effort to express a sincere and demonstrated interest in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy etc.

Note: Some students may choose to do a GAP Year. This would require proper planning with the pre-health adviser to ensure a meaningful and progressive year while in transition.
