Dr. Prabir Bhattacharya did his PhD from the University of Oxford, UK. For over 30 years, he is involved in teaching and research in the computer science field. He is currently a Full Professor with tenure and the Chair of the Department of Computer Science at the Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD. During 2009-2015, he was a Full Professor at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio where during 2009-2012, he was the Chair of the Computer Science Department. During 2004-209, he was a Distinguished Professor (a "Canada Research Chair, Tier 1") at the Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. During 1999- 2004, he served as a Principal Scientist and a Project Leader at the Panasonic Research Laboratories in Princeton, New Jersey. Earlier, he was a Full Professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Nebraska in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. 

He is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and also an elected Fellow of International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR). He has graduated 12 PhD students and 13 Masters Students. Two of his former PhD students are currently Full Professors in universities in USA. He has co-authored 325 publications including 129 journal papers, and also he holds 4 US Patents. He is on the editorial boards of several journals including the IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics and the Pattern Recognition. In 2008, he received an Outstanding Contributions Award from the IEEE System, Man and Cybernetics Society. He has been an Invited Speaker or Keynote Speaker in many conferences. 

The practical applicability of his research is exemplified by the fact that his research has been cited as references in 119 US Patents including by companies such as Microsoft (14 times), Google, Apple, IBM, AT&T, Disney, Red Hat, SAP, Sony, Kodak, Morgan Stanley, Samsung, Honeywell, etc. 

His research as the Principal Investigator has been funded by several federal agencies such as the NSF, AFOSR, BMDO, NIH and the NASA. His current research interests include image understanding and information security.

In summer 2015, at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, all the undergraduates together in the Departments of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences voted Dr. Bhattacharya as the "Professor of the Semester" - this is a prestigious honor awarded solely by the university student community with no involvement from the university administration.
