Department of Public Health Analysis

The Department of Public Health Analysis is dedicated to teaching epidemiology, biostatistics, and research methodology.  Also the students have the opportunity to engage in epidemiological research.

What do epidemiologists do?  Epidemiologists investigate the distribution and causes of diseases by comparing populations.  Epidemiologists have had important roles in finding the causes of diseases such as heart disease, breast cancer, and AIDS, among many others.  They also have leading roles in finding causes of outbreaks and epidemics of infectious disease, investigating the efficacy of new drugs and screening modalities.

What do biostatisticians do?  Biostatisticians develop and use mathematical models to make correct inferences about health from data gathered as part of public health research studies.   Biostatisticians work closely with epidemiologists in analyzing data.

Where do epidemiologists and biostatisticians work?  In universities, research institutes, health departments, cancer centers, pharmaceuticals, and many other institutes.  For example, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Baltimore City Health Department are among many places that hire epidemiologists and biostatisticians.

Bottom line:  If you are interested in discovering the causes and distribution of diseases, such as cancer, consider training in epidemiology and biostatistics.
