Test-taking skills are  components  not connected to the knowledge of the subject matter, but include the individual's attitude and approach towards taking a test. The acquisition of new knowledge often requires test taking. There are two main factors that contribute to successful test scores these are preparation and test-taking strategies.

  The type of exam that is administered to undergraduate nursing students for admission to the BSN program is the HESI.

 Health Education Systems, Inc.(HESI) -  Are  examinations that are often being administered to nursing students to evaluate the curricular program and to provide evidence  that the curriculum may need to be changed or modified.

Morgan State University also uses objective and essay styles of testing for the undergraduate nursing students. There are several fundamentals for developing test-taking skills.

Test Taking Skills

 Preparing.

 Establishing a positive attitude when taking a test.

 Knowing the specific type of test and how the test will be graded.

 Following directions.

 Proceeding from one item to the next, without wasting time.

 Not being intimidated by difficult questions and making an educated guess.

Test-Taking Strategies:

 Understand the purpose of the test.

 Determine the types of questions that may be asked on the given test.

 Connect with a study-buddy.

 Read the questions carefully, However, do not read too much into the question.

 Consider your first answer as a probability of being the correct choice.

 Organize time.

 Manage anxiety. Practice relaxation techniques.

Before answering the questions

Read the directions.

Scan the entire exam and familiarize yourself with the types of questions that are being asked.

 Look for weights assigned to particular sections and develop quick plans.

During the test (when answering objective/essay questions)

Do not labor over a question. If a question is taking undue time and thought, mark it, leave it, and return to it later (if applicable).

Read all multiple of the choice answers before choosing your answer.

 Strategies for answering essay questions

 Carefully read the directions.

 Select those questions for which you are best prepared and begin with the most simple.

 Process the amount of time needed to answer each question.
