Nation's First Black Female Licensed Architect Dies
Norma Merrick Sklarek, the first African American woman in the country to become a licensed architect, who helped produce Terminal 1 at Los Angeles International Airport and the American Embassy in Tokyo, died Monday at her home in Pacific Palisades. She was 85.
Faculty and Students win Preservation Award
Professor Ruth Connell and Dale Green and students (Sam Armstrong, Walter Avelar, Alieu Bawo, Willyem Boles, Troy Leftwich, and Olusanmi Faweinmi) from the Summer Cambridge Studio were recipients of the Excellence in Community Engagement Award from the 2012 Maryland Preservation Awards (Maryland Historical Trust) on January 31, 2012.
Faculty Join Historic Commission
Professors Dale Green and Barbara Mobarak were officially sworn in as new members for the Maryland Commission on African-American History and Culture (MCAAHC) in February 2012.

SA+P Takes Manhattan

A Passage to India
Suzanne Frasier, Associate Professor at the Morgan State University School of Architecture + Planning, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach and do research at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, India during the 2012-2013 academic year, the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced recently.
LA Program Kickstarts the Herring Run Project
The Graduate Landscape Architecture Program renewed its promise to the community regarding Herring Run conservation starting with Professor Archana Sharma's teaching project this Summer.
The Roadhouse Blues
Students from the Architecture and Environmental Design's design build summer studio, led by Professor Michael Zebrowski, did another project for Artscape, America's largest free art festival, on August 19 - 21.

The School of Architecture and Planning is pleased to announce its first Film + Architecture Series (FAS). The Film + Architecture Series at Morgan State University, hosted and sponsored by the School of Architecture + Planning, will be the beginning of a series of films that will be featured throughout the academic year, specifically, two (2) per semester.

SA+P at Interschool Design Competition
The Interschool Design Competition is an annual gathering at the National Building Museum of six Washington D.C. area university architecture programs in a collaborative design charette and awards program, organized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) including Morgan State University, University of Maryland, Howard University, Catholic University of America, Virginia Tech and University of DC.
SA+P Spearheads Morgan Community Mile
President David Wilson has charged Dean Mary Anne Akers to spearhead the new Morgan Commuity Mile Initiative, a university/community partnership where residents, businesses, public officials, and other stakeholders come together with Morgan's faculty, students, and staff to make our community a better place.

Dan Bailey, President of Penza Bailey Architects and member of our graduate program in architecture advisory council, was recently interviewed in the NCARB E-Connector, an online newsletter, about his experience working with SA+P students as part of the BIM course that was developed as a result of funding the NCARB grant program received in 2008.

Professor Scharmen to Present at ACSA
Department of Architecture's Professor Frederick Scharmen will present his paper on NASA's space colony designs of the 1970s at the 101st Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Conference in San Francisco.
