The Housing Process: From Application to Assignment
Finalizing your Housing
If you have received your assignment confirmation via your email address, please click on the link below in order to finalize your housing process
Roommates
A roommate is someone who will be sleeping in the same bedroom as you. It is the department’s policy not to discriminate when assigning roommates. All students will be assigned based on information the student provides on the housing application. We have a roommate matching survey within the housing application to increase the compatibility of the random assignment process.
Every effort will be made to honor mutual roommate requests (two students only). If you and another student want to live together, you must request each other on the paper housing application. For best consideration in being placed with your preferred roommate, you should submit your housing application no later than July 1, 2012. We attempt to honor all mutual roommate requests, but you might not be assigned with your preferred roommate. For example, if your preferred roommate is admitted to the University after you are, and submits a housing application after you submit yours, you might not be assigned together. Roommate requests, especially those submitted after July 1, are not guaranteed.
Living-Learning Communities
Morgan State University Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) are great places to begin and continue your college career! These are floors, sections or entire residence halls where you request to live near others that share a particular interest in academics, social and cultural issues, and activities. For the 2012-13 academic year, students will have several living learning communities to choose from in the following interest areas. There are limited spaces in each community and community themes and space availability are subject to change.
Freshman Year Experience (FYE): For first year students, this community is designed to address the transitional needs and concerns that many face when they enter college.
Sophomore Experience: For students classified as sophomores, this community is designed to support its members by providing experiences in the areas of academics, career development, social networking and personal development.
Honors: For students admitted to the University Honors Program, a University-registered academic honor society, or students with a cumulative University grade point average of 3.2 or higher.
Room Assignments
Current students may submit a building or living-learning community (LLC) preference on their housing application. Newly-admitted students may submit a living-learning community (LLC) preference on the housing application. We will attempt to assign you according to your preferences, but assignments are based on availability of space and eligibility for a space (e.g. Thurgood Marshall Complex or Harper-Tubman Honors House) and your preference may not be accommodated. The assignment process begins in May and will continue until the new academic year has started or until each building reaches full capacity. For best consideration of your preferences, you are encouraged to apply early.
If you do not request a specific roommate, our office will use the information that you submit in the Personal Data section of the application to complete a roommate assignment. We encourage you to provide honest answers to the questions in this section of the application in order to increase your chances for a good roommate match.
Please note that our office will communicate regularly with you via email regarding the status of your housing application. We will send this correspondence only to your University-issued @morgan.edu email account. Failure to regularly access this account may result in a delay in processing your requests or your application being designated as inactive.
The Office of Residence Life & Housing will begin making room assignments in May to those students who have made satisfactory financial arrangements for tuition, fees, room and board for the Fall Semester (see below) and you will receive notification of your assignment via email. If you have not made satisfactory financial arrangements for Fall Semester 2012 tuition, fees, and room and board by August 1, 2012 you may not receive a housing assignment for the academic year 2012-13.

Also, transfer students who are assigned to Marble Hall Gardens can decline a meal plan or choose from any meal plan category: Any 25, 50, 75, or 100 meals per semester or, 5, 7, 10, 14, or 19 meals per week.

If you would like to increase or decrease your meal plan in accordance with the stated guidelines, please submit these changes on the application or download and submit to our office the completed Meal Plan Request form provided on the ORLH webpage under ‘Forms and Resources’ within the first two weeks of the semester.
Supplemental student housing policy
The University also desires to accommodate all students requesting to live on campus. At times, the designed housing capacity of the residence halls is less than the demand for housing and housing is not guaranteed. A waiting list will be utilized in these cases and a supplemental housing policy, therefore, has been established to accommodate the needs of all students and reads as follows:
· When demand for on-campus housing exceeds the current designed capacity of the residence halls, supplemental or “overflow” housing accommodations will be provided. These overflow accommodations may include:
· Increasing current residence hall living unit capacities (rooms/suites/apartments) by augmenting the number of beds and furniture to reasonably accommodate more students.
· Reconfiguring and furnishing other areas within housing facilities to reasonably accommodate more students, such as study lounges and other enclosed and secured areas.
While supplemental housing measures may pose some inconvenience to students, the University will make every effort to make these living accommodations as comfortable as possible. Students will be reassigned from overflow housing accommodations according to appropriate roommate-matching and when space within other on-campus housing facilities becomes available.
Terms and Conditions
The Student Housing & Food Contract is for the entire academic year (both fall and spring semesters), or the remaining portion of the academic year at the time of occupancy. It is a legally binding contract.
