Students' Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the ASCEND Summer Research Institute

1. When is the application due?

The application deadlines are February 9, 2018 for early decision, and March 25, 2018 for regular decision.

2. When are the dates of the 2018 SRI?

We do not yet know the exact dates. It is usually the last week of May through the third or fourth week of July.

3. How much will I be paid for my participation in the SRI?

Students will be paid $15/hr for each hour worked, up to about $5,040 (before taxes).

4. Where will students be living?

All SRI students live together on campus, perhaps in the Thurgood Marshall Apartments.

5. How much does the housing cost?

In 2016, housing cost $25/day, or approximately $1,400. Students are required to pay for housing from their stipend.

6. Do I have to live in the SRI housing?

Yes, all SRI students must live together in MSU on-campus housing. Participation in the SRI requires students' participation in group activities during the evenings and weekend hours. 

7. Is there a meal plan? If so, how much does it cost?

While there is a meal plan available over the summer, the SRI does not include or require it. The apartments have kitchens.

8. Can I take time off during the SRI?

Unfortunately, no. If you decide to participate in the SRI, then it is a full-time commitment.

9. Can I work during the SRI?

Unfortunately, no. If you decide to participate in the SRI, then it is a full-time commitment.

10. Will there be activities in the evenings and on the weekends?

Yes, there will be SRI activities on evenings and weekends.

11. I am on a Morgan sports team, and there are practice requirements over the summer. Can I participate in the SRI?

Possibly. We would need to review the team's practice schedule in order to determine if the schedules would accommodate each other.
