Dr. Michael Koban's early career was in research & development and product development for the clinical immunodiagnostics market at Becton Dickinson Advanced Diagnostics, EnSys Environmental Products, and Molecular Tool.

In 1995, he joined the faculty in the Department of Biology at Morgan State University. He has maintained an adjunct faculty position at Johns Hopkins University since 1995 in the Advanced Biotechnology Studies program. At Morgan, in collaboration with Dr. Gloria Hoffman, Dr. Koban has established a rat sleep deprivation/restriction model to investigate the many pathologies that develop with chronic sleep loss, including changes in neurochemistry that affect food intake behavior, energy metabolism, and diabetes.

Dr. Michael Koban is also the coordinator of the PhD Program in Bioenvironmental Sciences. He has been involved in training minority undergraduate students since 1997, both in the classroom and in the laboratory. He served as the Co-Director for the MBRS RISE program.
