Our New Projects

We have two new projects with Calvert County Public Schools and W. E.B. DuBois High School in Baltimore City:

PLANS
PLankton And Nutrient Studies for the Chesapeake Bay

PLANS is a program sponsored by PEARL and the Society for Ocean Sciences and funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).  Our program is designed to provide hands-on experiences for Calvert County high school environmental science students by investigating nutrient enrichment and phytoplankton dynamics in the Chesapeake Bay. Through this field experience, an overview of life and water quality in the Bay will be investigated, the causes of phytoplankton blooms will be explored, and the students will come to understand the role they can play in helping to improve the water quality of the Bay.  The website for this project is www.plansforthebay.org.

Experiencing the Chesapeake Bay:
Pathway from High School to the Environmental Sciences

Morgan State University, in collaboration with W.E.B. DuBois High School for Environmental Science in Baltimore and support from the National Science Foundation, is working to ensure a consistent, supportive and sustainable pathway from high school to university in the geoscience disciplines through an array of integrated activities.   Large numbers of students and teachers from this school will be engaged in inquiry-based field trips focused on environmental issues related to the Chesapeake Bay.  A summer intern program at PEARL will further provide mentored research experience to students with geoscience interests and potential.
