Summary:  Morgan State University is seeking an Assistant Dean for Student Development, Retention, and Services.  This individual will be responsible for work with the dean to develop and cultivate programming that will ensure the academic and intellectual grow and progress of students with the College of Liberal Arts.  The focus will be on increasing student enrollment, retention and graduation.  

The Assistant or Associate Dean for Student Development, Retention, and Services

  • Advises the Dean on all matters related to students and participates in the formulation and implementation of policies in this area;

  • Develops strategic initiatives to support students development as young scholars;

  • Works with department chairs and faculty to maximize student support services at the departmental and college levels

  • Work with departmental chairs as well as the Center for Career Development and School of Graduate Studies to help student develop post-graduation plan (Classroom to Career Series )

  • Coordinates undergraduate internships and summer research activities

    • Accesses and develops lists of offerings by contacting other institutions and websites;
    • Builds synergies between departments and students as part of academic research engagement plan;
    • Develops and sponsors seminars / workshops to promote student development and scholarship (graduation requirements, post-graduation plans, getting into graduate and professional schools, careers with a liberal arts degree)
    • Develops and coordinates internal and external partnerships for student services (e.g. Center for Career Development, Residence Life for Learning Communities, Honors Program

Students Services include

  • Analyzes and reports on enrollment trends for department chairpersons, and produces reports pertinent to course offerings and enrollment as assigned by Dean;

  • Makes sure that students understand and adhere to the departmental curriculum and that there is cohesive, and clear communication with their respective departments;

  • Works with department chairs to clarify and communicate student advising;

  • Works with the University's Transfer Center to evaluate transfer students records

Basic qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in a relevant discipline and a teaching and scholarly record meriting appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank in an academic unit within the College;

  • Strong student development and leadership building skills;
