Department:    Police and Public Safety

Duties:   Performs the duties of Police Sergeant under only general supervision; serves as a supervisor over routine operations and staff of a shift,  a complex unit, or a specialized unit; sets priorities and evaluates staff; functions as a senior specialist responsible for coordinating activities of a complex specialized unit; monitors operations and performance for adherence to departmental standards and takes corrective action as appropriate; prepares reports and makes recommendations to improve operations; investigates citizen complaints regarding police performance; assumes command at serious accidents or incidents; inspects law enforcement personnel under their supervision; reviews and edits reports from assigned staff; performs all the duties of a University Police Officer II and III. This position reports to the Lieutenant.

Minimum Qualifications:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Two (2) years as a sworn/certified Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission following the Police Academy. Possession of a Class “C” Maryland State driver’s license or equivalent is required.

Preferred:    Candidates with a minimum of 4 years of sworn police officer experience.

  • Have completed any probationary period associated with the employee’s job classifications

  • Have not been required to provide verification for sick leave use, within six (6) months of the date of the application

  • Be in good physical condition; an employee who is currently on modified duty status or on leave, must provide documentation verifying eligibility to return to work on full duty status must be attached to the employee’s application materials when delivered to the Office of Human Resources.

  • Received a rating of ‘meets standards’ or better on the employee evaluation, preceding the date of the employee’s application.

  • Proof of possession of the posted minimum qualifications and skills necessary for the position.  Proof of qualifications and skills necessary to perform the duties of a position must be evident and clearly documented for any individual applying for a promotional opportunity.
