Baltimore - Morgan State University's Department of Strategic Communication (SCOM) within the School of Global Journalism & Communication was named to PRNEWS' 2022 Education A-list. The list spotlights the top 40 higher education institutions advancing the careers of public relations and marketing professionals in the U.S.

PRNEWS editors compiled the list by reviewing how programs prepare students for success in their future career paths. Programs that continue to evolve their curriculum to reflect the changing nature of the field of communication and ensure students have ample extracurricular offerings beyond the classroom are celebrated.

“We are all very proud of this recognition,” said David Marshall, professor and chair of the Department of Strategic Communication. “The work of our talented students fuels the department's success. They are thriving in a fast-paced cutting-edge curriculum and are leaving Morgan getting great jobs.”

The A-List honors come just two months after The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) awarded SCOM the Certification in Education in Public Relations (CEPR) after a site visit review. SCOM is one of a few undergraduate PR programs nationwide to hold the credential and is currently the only HBCU in the nation to have earned the CEPR.

“The quality of our SCOM curriculum is a testament to our dedicated faculty who are laser-focused on student success,” said Jacqueline Jones, SGJC Dean. “They continue to seek multiple opportunities both on and off-campus to ensure students are getting a great blend of theory and practice to help students become leaders in their field.”

Morgan State University’s School of Global Journalism and Communication began in July 2013. DeWayne Wickham, a former columnist for USA TODAY and a founding member and former president of the National Association of Black Journalists, served as its founding dean. The school is dedicated to giving voice to people who struggle to contribute to the public discourse that shapes the nation and the world through innovative teaching, cutting-edge research and exemplary service to Maryland, the nation and the world. The school seeks to instill students with the skills, knowledge, and training necessary to become effective communicators and to add to the diversity of thought in the media. In May 2020, the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) voted unanimously to grant SGJC full accreditation.

SGJC’s Department of Strategic Communication, affectionately known as #scomup, is one of three academic units housed within the School and is focused on preparing students for careers in public relations, social media, entertainment communication, and digital-related jobs.
