Theatre Morgan Presents:"THE GREAT MACDADDY"By Paul Carter Harrison Directed by David D. Mitchell April 4 @ 7:30 pm SYNOPSIS The Great MacDaddy ranges across 20th century America, criss-crossing decades. MacDaddy begins as a sort of hustler-prince, a prohibition vintner on the trail of his vanished friend Wine, who represents a lost magic, the secret of the race. His adventures are organized as a sequence of beats that are interlaced with music that runs from gospel to voodoo to jazz, dance that incorporates music of the 1970’s, and song that’s incantative and sometimes in the form of scatty rhyme or spoken word. The playwright, Paul Carter Harrison, introduced terms such as “Nommo” and “Mother/ Word” as constructive references for Black Theatre. His play, The Great MacDaddy won an Obie Award and his play Tabernacle won the Audelco Award for Best Creative Musical. The Drama of Nommo is a book he wrote, which is a collection of essays that identified African retentions in the aesthetic of African American culture and has helped many directors in the Black Theatre practice. David D. Mitchell will direct The Great MacDaddy with resident light designer Cheryl Williams, guest costume designer Laura Ridgeway, guest scenic designer Jeff Harrison and guest sound designer Jimmy Engelkemier. All performances are in the Turpin-Lamb Theater of the Murphy Fine Arts Center; 2201 Argonne Drive on the campus of Morgan State University.
