Department: Office of General Counse
lIntroduction: The Office of General Counsel is recruiting for an Assistant General Counsel. Interested candidates should have a strong desire to develop goals that will advance the mission of the department, at one of the Nation's largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
Duties: Providing written and oral legal advice; conducting legal research and analysis; training University staff on current laws and regulations impacting assigned areas; managing a legal case portfolio focusing primarily on the areas of procurement, contract review and development, business transactions, intellectual property, student affairs, compliance, legislative affairs, risk management and insurance, public records, litigation support, general education issues, etc. and performing other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a Juris doctorate from a law school accredited by the American Bar Associate and at least 3 years of experience practicing law.
Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the minimum qualifications, experience practicing law in a higher education setting or with higher education clients.
Requirements: Licensed to practice law and is in good standing in Maryland, or eligible to be licensed in Maryland within 1 year from the date of employment; knowledge of constitutional law and education law; knowledge of contract review and negotiation; the ability to litigate or provide litigation support; excellent written and oral communication skills; the ability to research complex legal issues and prepare legal opinions and documents.
