Department: Institutional Advancement

Duties: To maintain the Morgan State University website via the World Wide Web; ensures that the website is current, accurate, easy to navigate, and that it addresses the needs of students, faculty, and the greater community; performs a variety of technical tasks to make sure the site operates properly and can be accessed quickly; ensures that the server can properly handle e-mail, transmit news, and download files; maintains a "firewall" that protects the university's information from hackers and/or others who may attempt malicious or illegal activity; creates and designs web pages; updates information contained on the website or in databases linked to the site and checks the links on the site, regularly to make sure that they are functional; and monitors traffic on the site and notes how often various pages, features, and links are used.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in computer science, computer information technology, management information systems or other information technology related field to include course in web page design, development and programming. Two years of experience in web page design, development, and programming.

Requirements: Knowledge of programming language (i.e. UNIX, C++, Java, HTML, and XML); knowledge of web development applications and web authoring, publishing, composition, editing, imaging, conversion, and graphic manipulation software; knowledge of the structure, conversion, and graphic manipulation software; knowledge of server operating systems such as Windows, UNIX, Linux or other web-enabled operating systems; skill in the access and retrieval of data across multiple platforms, using relation database technology and various querying and reporting tools; skill in the use of personal computers and related software; ability to design, implement, and maintain an agency's web site; ability to use software for web site authoring and maintenance; ability to use various protocols and utilities to maintain the web site; ability to communicate effectively; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with users and program staff.

Note:

  1. Additional experience in web page design, development, and programming may be substituted for the required education, on a year-for-year basis.
  2. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and completion of an approved certification program for Web Professionals sufficient to provide the necessary skills to build and manage a web site and to coordinate with inside and outside resources to accomplish web goals may be substituted for the required education.
  3. Any combination of experience and training equivalent to the above may be considered qualifying, based upon a determination by the Office of Human Resources.
