Engineering & Technological Services
This section provides a broad range of technological and engineering services primarily to the departments operations and consequently to the entire University community. The Physical Plant Department has over 200 employees and an office presence in 12 buildings. All sections of the Physical Plant have computers and are connected via the campus network backbone. In addition, the department has its own fibre optic network supporting the Energy Management System (EMS) and Fire & Security with front ends in the Washington Service Center. With the emergence of new information technologies and the ability to streamline operations, this section is tasked with introducing and implementing efficient ways and means of achieving the Departmentâ€™s goals. Some of them, managing the Departmentâ€™s local area network, databases, information storage and providing technical support. The Engineering and Technological Services section provides leadership and guidance to the management of the Universityâ€™s CCTV Surveillance and Access Control systems. In addition, this section works with the Design and Construction Management department providing insight on capital projects. This section also has the task of preparing bid specifications for procurement of goods and services at the different categories, I, II and III for small procurements and those above $25,000.
Environmental Health and Safety
This section works to monitor and comply with all federal and state laws associated with environmental regulatory compliance. This includes regular campus safety inspections and repair of fire alarm systems, generators, buildings, grounds, roadways and sidewalks. Currently, the Environmental Health and Safety section is devising a comprehensive University emergency preparedness plan. The staff consists of three people including the section manager.
