Department:   Physical Plant

Duties:  Supervises groundskeepers performing manual labor duties in the maintenance of grounds and facilities; supervises, coaches, and evaluates employees; takes appropriate employee disciplinary actions when warranted, approves employee leave and time sheets,  determines work priorities, plans, schedules, assigns and reviews work; trains subordinate personnel; supervises ground maintenance activities including cultivating, planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding, mowing and/or pruning lawns, gardens, shrubs, and trees; directs the removal of trash and debris from assigned areas; supervises the removal of snow and ice; spreads salt and de-icers; coordinates with MSU's recycling efforts; instructs employees to collect the items to be recycled and ensures that they are taken to the designated area; prepares and maintains written reports and records; ensures adequate supplies, materials and equipment are maintained; ensures the operational readiness and safety of equipment; performs routine assembly, cleaning and maintenance of equipment; assists in maintenance of outdoor fields and athletic facilities; performs procedures for measuring, mixing, and applying fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals;   performs  other duties as assigned.                                 

Minimum Qualifications:   High School Diploma or GED; Three years grounds keeping experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.

Requirements:    Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices;  knowledge of procedures for mixing and applying pesticides and other chemicals; skill in the operation and proper care of hand tools, power tools and equipment; skill in organizing and coordinating grounds maintenance work, ability to provide guidance and instruction; ability to read, write and perform arithmetic calculations; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively; ability to supervise and train groundskeepers; ability to operate and perform minor maintenance on assigned hand tools and power tools and equipment; ability to work in, on, around, under and over trees, shrubs, buildings, and facilities; ability to work at heights up to 35 feet; ability to perform physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and frequent heavy lifting; ability to work in adverse weather conditions; ability to work in personal protective equipment.
