Department:    Earl S. Richardson Library

Duties:    Manages the acquisition, access, maintenance, and preservation of serials in all formats; reports to the Associate Director of Technical Services; works with librarians in the Earl S. Richardson Library and faculty members to select and implement special projects and plays a  significant role  in managing the overall operations of the Acquisition/Serials departments; works with Collection Development concerning vendors, ordering, and payment issues; participates in research and creative work, and service to the University-at-large, i.e., faculty, students, staff and administration and the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI); provides leadership of a unit consisting of 3-4 full time employee staff that acquires, checks-in, claims and preserves serials and standing order monographic series; develops and implements policies and procedures; resolves serials related problems encountered by staff; oversees the use of Aleph's (Ex Libris) acquisitions clients; prepares reports and maintains statistics; performs original cataloguing for continuing resources; works closely with Collection Development and Electronic Services regarding acquisitions and access to electronic journals; participates in professional organizations and stays informed of current trends in the serials industry regarding vendor-developed services, automated systems and publishing models; prepares reports detailing the activities of the Serials and Acquisition Departments; participates in forums, i.e., local, state-wide and national concerning the practices in serials and acquisitions; investigates  industry-leading technology solutions for libraries in the field of serials and acquisitions, e-source resolutions and licensing concerns; and performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:   Masters Degree from an ALA-accredited institution;  3-5 years supervisory experience in an academic library with current digital library technologies, standards, and practices.

Requirements:   Knowledge of serials acquisitions and serials management; knowledge of OCLC and an integrated library system; knowledge of AACR2, RAD, LCSH, MARC 21 and LC classification; knowledge of electronic serials resources; knowledge of Aleph acquisitions and cataloging modules, ability to supervise library staff in an academic library setting; ability to perform cataloging; , ability to organize, handle multiple tasks, and produce detailed work; ability to work independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment; ability to communicate effectively; ability to interact with diverse technological backgrounds.
