Kwanzaa

What is Kwanzaa?

Kwanzaa takes place this Saturday December, 7, 2013 in the University Student Center. Volunteers are asked to be there 8 a.m. All volunteers are asked to wear jeans and Kwanzaa colored top (black, red and green) Community service hours are available to all those who volunteer!

Kwanzaa is an annual celebration hosted by the Office of Community Service. Each year on the first Saturday in December, dedicated kwanzaa volunteers educate Baltimore City youth on the importance of staying in school, and avoiding the use of alcohol and drugs. Utilizing music, games, exhibits, dance, art, storytelling, food and other culturally rich activities, Morgan State Students Convey the message that unity and pride are the focal point of the Kwanzaa Celebration.

KWANZAA, an African-American holiday celebrated from December 26 through January 1, is a spiritual period during which Africans born in the United States unite in a common exercise to reflect and plan, celebrate and inspire, uplift and rebuild in an attempt to improve the lives of Africans throughout the Diaspora. By incorporating the Nguzo Saba, or the Seven Principles of KWANZAA, we share with our children the importance of pride and self-determination, collective work and responsibility, unity, purpose and faith, and how these principles have enabled us to endure throughout our struggles.

Celebrating Kwanzaa at Morgan.......
Morgan celebrates Kwanzaa on the first Saturday in December. Children throughout the City of Baltimore are invited to the campus to learn about the fundamental values and traditions upon which African people have built civilizations. Music, games, exhibits, food, dance, storytelling, and a number of other activities are used to explain the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa. The Celebration provides a wealth of cultural, educational and social resources which are beneficial to the youth who come to participate in the Kwanzaa activities. Every year dedicated Morganites act as role models and mentors by challenging Baltimore's youth to improve their performance in school by incorporating the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa into their daily lives. In addition, Kwanzaa participants also gain exposure to a variety of possible career opportunities and role models on the university's campus.
