The Bear Necessity Card is a multi-functional card that serves as the official Morgan State University ID card, library card, meal card, privilege card, health card and debit card to the entire MSU community. Your official ID card utilizes today's state of the art technology to meet all your campus needs in a convenient and efficient manner. Your photograph, Name ID number and university status appear on the card and it should be carried at all times, by the person to whom it was issued. After applying cash to your spending accounts your card becomes a debit Card and you can begin making cash free purchases at various location on campus. Your card is valid until you separate from the university, therefore it is not necessary to get a new card each semester. Faculty, staff and students are issued their first card at no cost, however, replacement cards are $25.00. Cards which malfunction for no apparent reason will be replaced at no charge.
How Can I Get a Bear Necessity Card
Students - Once you've cleared registration and paid all tuition and fees or signed up for a deferred payment plan you can come to the Bear Necessity Card Center located in the Montebello Complex, Room D-128 to receive your ID card. Please be sure to bring a valid form of ID, such as driver license, state photo ID, military ID or passport.
Faculty and Staff - The Office of Human Resources prepare and issue a MSU "Employee Identification Request Form" , after which, you can come to the Bear Necessity Card Center located in the Montebello Complex, Room D-128 to receive your ID card. Please be sure to bring a valid form of ID, such as driver license, state photo ID, military ID or passport.
As the official ID card, it has the Morgan State University colors of Orange and Blue, The Holmes Hall logo and the University "Bear" mascot. The magnetic stripe on the back of the card is encoded with a randomly-generated sixteen digit number. Your social security number is not encoded on your card.
Your card allows you access to University activities and services. After applying cash to your spending accounts, your card becomes a debit card and you can begin making cash free purchases at the print shop, bookstore, vending machines, canteen and other locations on campus. You can add money to your Limited General and Retail accounts through the Morgan Value Terminal (MVT) by following the step-by-step instructions displayed on the screen. You cannot transfer funds between accounts at the MVT machines, but you can come into the Bear Necessity Card Center and we will gladly, at your request, transfer funds the funds for you.
