Faculty Research Profile: School of Engineering

Introduction

The Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. School of Engineering has earned an outstanding reputation of academic excellence in preparation of undergraduate and graduate students since its inception in 1984. The School of Engineering has fully accredited undergraduate programs in Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Industrial Manufacturing and Information Engineering. Its graduate programs offer Master of Engineering, Master of Transportation, and Doctor of Engineering degrees.

The School of Engineering offers educational programs which ensure that students acquire the ability to master fundamental principles of engineering that benefit the society. In addition to the nationally competitive Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)-accredited programs in industrial, electrical, and civil engineering; there are diverse and important opportunities for research, internships, and other work experiences. The school is especially noted for the close faculty/ student interaction, low student/ faculty ratio in engineering courses, and opportunities for pre-professional experiences through participation in undergraduate engineering organizations. It produces more African-American scientists and engineers than any other college or university in the State of Maryland. In a typical year, the School of Engineering graduates more than two-thirds of the state’s African-American Civil Engineers, 60 percent of its African-American Electrical Engineers, 80 percent of its African-American Telecommunications specialists, more than one-third of its African-American Mathematicians, and all of Maryland’s African-American Industrial Engineers and Physicists.

The facilities and faculty are excellent. Currently, the School is housed in the $12 million state-of-the-art Mitchell Engineering Building and the newly acquired William Donald Schaeffer Engineering Building. There is a broad range of faculty research capabilities including satellite technology, multi-spectral remote sensing, modeling and visualization, human factors engineering, fuel combustion technology, environmental engineering and hydrologic modeling. Many research projects receive external funding from private firms, corporations, and government agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Science Foundation, Army Research Laboratory and the National Security Agency.
