Dear Morgan Community:
I invite your participation as Morgan State University prepares for its decennial Self-Study focusing on the Middle States Commission on Higher Education's (MSCHE) Standards for Accreditation and Requirements of Affiliation. A MSCHE team last conducted a ten-year accreditation review of Morgan on April 6-9, 2008 and the University was found to have met all 14 MSCHE's Characteristics of Excellence. In the spring of 2013, the University submitted its Review Report (PRR) successfully addressing a number of recommendations made by the MSCHE team.
Since Morgan's last self-study and the MSCHE team visit in 2008, the University approved "Growing the Future, Leading the World: The Strategic Plan for Morgan State University, 2011 - 2021" and it has undergone a number of programmatic and organizational changes. During this interim period, MSCHE has also changed its accreditation processes and accreditation cycle. Chief among the changes are a reduction in the number of evaluation standards from 14 to 7, a reduction in the number of years between the institutional self-study and MSCHE team visit from 10 years to 8 years, the submission of annual reports and the elimination of the 5 year Periodic Review Report (PRR).
Given the University's accomplishments since the 2008 MSCHE team visit and the 2013 PRR, this Self-Study is intended to answer questions concerning the following four trends impacting Morgan's future growth and development:
- Past Accomplishments and Future Direction
- Student Diversity and Development
- University Policies and Procedures
- Communication and Dissemination of Information
Morgan officially launched the self-study process on March 8, 2016, in the Travelers' Auditorium of the Dixon Science Center where the Steering Committee and members of the 8 subcommittees were introduced. The Self-Study Steering Committee is chaired by Dr. Maurice C. Taylor, Vice President for Academic Outreach and Engagement, and co-chaired by Dr. Solomon Alao, Assistant Vice President for Assessment.
In these web pages you will find a number of documents including the Self-Study Design that will assist you in keeping up with the work of the Steering Committee and its 8 subcommittees as they prepared for the next MSCHE team visit in 2018. Feel free to forward any questions, observations, and recommendations that you may have to either Dr. Taylor at email@example.com or Dr. Alao at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you for your cooperation and support in assisting the Self-Study Steering Committee in demonstrating Morgan's continued compliance with MSCHE's standards and our continuing progress toward institutional and programmatic improvement.
Gloria J. Gibson
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
