About the Program
In short, we are federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education to increase the rate at which first generation and low income students complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. And ever since our e stablished in 1972, we have been highly successful in that endeavor. Our historic program is located in Baltimore, Maryland, on the campus of Morgan State University, which is one of the most prestigious Historic Black Colleges and Universities across the nation. Once enrolled, our participants become progressive in life and in their pursuit of life's opportunities. Upon completion of our program, many students feel enlighten to have shared the Upward Bound experence.
We serve 80 9th through 12th grade students from our target high schools and target areas in East and North East Baltimore City. Morgan State Upward Bound primary serves high school students from:
- W.E.B DuBois
- Reginald Lewis
- Dr. Samuel L Banks
- Thurgood Marshall
If space is available, we also extend participation to students who in reside our target zip codes in East/North East Baltimore City.
Between our academic year and our summer residential programs, we strive to promote a year-round atmosphere that is very supportive of and dedicated to encouraging our students' pursuit of higher learning, and maximizing their life opportunities.
Our Services
We provide fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Through personal and group activities, we offer our participants an array of educational, social, and culturally enriching services.
Services during the academic year consist of after school and Saturday tutoring, counseling, skill workshops, and team building and recreational activities. We also go on college tours and cultivating field trips and hold workshops for parents and students throughout the year. Our Tutoring service provides individual tutoring assistance that complements the student's courses and help prepare them for taking high school assessments and college admission tests.
During our summer session, students live on Morgan's campus, and while in college classrooms, take college preparatory courses such as English, Science, Computer Science, and Mathematics. We also provide professional individual and group counseling that promote Educational and Career awareness, and Financial Planning.
