Morgan State University and Johns Hopkins University
Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships in Urban Health 2005-2006

The Prevention Sciences Research Center at Morgan State University (MSU) and the Urban Health Institute at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) announce the availability of 2-3 post-doctoral research fellowships that will focus on urban health.

Candidates must have defended their doctoral dissertations in any field related to public health or substance abuse from an accredited university by June 1, 2005. Post-doctoral fellows will collaborate with faculty from both MSU and JHU in ongoing research projects as well as conduct independent research. Successful candidates will receive mentoring about research opportunities, publications and career development. Both universities offer a rich academic environment of courses, seminars, and conferences.

The MSU Prevention Sciences Research Center studies the determinants of adverse health outcomes, and designs and implements interventions to prevent them. The Center houses the Drug Abuse Research Program and the Center for Health Disparities Solutions. The mission of the Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute is to marshal the resources of the University to improve the health and well being of the residents of Baltimore via research, as well as to implement and evaluate evidence-based interventions to solve urban health problems.

Faculty members from JHU and MSU are involved in a wide array of salient research on urban health problems, including obesity, HIV/AIDS, drug and alcohol use, violence, diabetes, hypertension, adolescent health, youth employment, after-school initiatives, sexual and reproductive health, immigrant families, health communication, and health disparities.

Fellowships are awarded for 1 year with possible renewal for a second year. Stipend amounts will depend upon experience (NIH scale). Research and other expenses are also covered.

Applications are due before April 15, 2005 and awards will be made by June 1, 2005. Fellowships will begin September 1, 2005.
