Faculty Fellowships

Description

The Prevention Sciences Research Center houses the Drug Abuse Research Program (DARP) and the Center for Health Disparities Solutions (CHDS). DARP and CHDS have Faculty Fellowship opportunities that facilitate the initiation of faculty research in BOTH of these areas. The goal of the fellowship opportunity is to provide necessary resources that facilitate the development of research manuscripts and/or grants for continued research.

Drug Abuse Research Program

DARP is funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Drug Abuse to enhance the research infrastructure to conduct drug abuse research and to increase the number of faculty actively engaged in research relevant to the epidemiology of drug use and abuse. Research conducted at DARP focuses on identifying factors (individual, social, family, environment) that influence drug taking behavior among minority populations, particularly African Americans. Fellows will have the opportunity to develop research efforts and/or work with experienced researchers on current efforts related to drug use including (HIV, opportunities to use drugs)

Center for Health Disparities Solutions

CHDS is a collaborative research effort between the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and Morgan State University and is funded by the National Institute of Health’s National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities. CHDS is dedicated to the elimination of ethnic/ racial, socioeconomic, and geopolitical disparities in health and health care. Research is aimed at identifying various factors that contribute to health disparities and developing useful interventions to reduce adverse health consequences. The major research areas addressed by CHDS are cancer, tobacco use and smoking behaviors, cardiovascular disease, HIV, diabetes, and obesity.

Eligibility

Only full-time faculty members at Morgan State University who are U.S Citizens/ residents are eligible. Applicants must not be preparing for tenure review during the fellowship period.

Scope of Support

Faculty Fellows will receive up to 30% of their salary for their work. Fellowships are one (1) semester in length, with the possibility of continuing for a second semester depending on the availability of funding.

Eligibility

Only full-time faculty members at Morgan State University who are not preparing for tenure review during the fellowship year are eligible. Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or resident.

Application Requirements
  1. Recent Curriculum Vitae (C.V.).

  2. Personal statement - The personal statement should include a description of research interests in drug abuse or health disparities. Please include your career plans following the fellowship period.

  3. Proposal (10 page maximum) - The proposal should outline the proposed research and include information about each of the following:
  4. Endorsement Letter - The application must include a letter from your department/ unit chair indicating unequivocal support of your research effort and participation in the program.

Only complete applications will be accepted. Applications should be submitted to Dr. Dorothy C. Browne, Director of the Prevention Sciences Research Center.

Selection Criteria

Members of the Executive Committee for the Center for Health Disparities Solutions and a Scientific Review panel will make funding recommendations. Preference will be given to junior faculty and individuals with a demonstrated interest in health disparities or drug abuse through practice/ service and/or research experience. Selections will be made by May 1, 2005. Fellowships may begin either in the Summer or Fall of the application year.
