Description
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Summer Research Program encourages participants to pursue careers in biomedical and behavioral research. The Drug Abuse Research Program (DARP) at Morgan State University is one of the sites hosting the program. The NIDA Summer Research Program is designed to introduce underrepresented minority high school and undergraduate students to drug abuse research through research placements with distinguished NIDA-funded investigators.
Morgan State University is located in Baltimore and provides a diverse and exciting environment for program participants to be introduced to drug abuse research. Up to four (4) undergraduate students will be selected for the ten (10)- week summer experience. The program includes training in statistics, research ethics, research methods as well as attendance at scientific meetings and conferences. Students will also participate in data collection and analysis, library research, manuscript preparation and field activities.
Eligibility
Applicants must be U.S Citizens or residents from a racial/ ethnic group that is recognized as underrepresented in the fields of biomedical and behavioral science (African-American, Hispanic, American Indian/ Alaska Native, and Asian/ Pacific Islander). Applicants must also be enrolled in college and be in good academic standing with at cumulative GPA of “B” or higher.
Scope of Support
All NIDA Summer Research participants receive stipends at the rate predetermined by NIDA. A per diem for lodging and travel expenses will also be provided if applicable.
Application Procedure
Application materials and supplemental program information are available on the NIDA website at http://www.drugabuse.gov/pdf/sposummer.pdf. The application along with an official transcript, two letters of recommendation and a personal statement indicating interest in a research career must be submitted directly to NIDA. Applicants interested in the Morgan program are encouraged to designate their preference on the application. It also strongly recommended that a copy of all application materials be sent to DARP.
