In fairy tales, a prince becomes a frog with the wave of a magic wand.  In science, metamorphosis is a slow and complex process.  Tadpoles lose their tales.  They gain legs.  They lose larval organs.  They gain missing adult organs.  Then finally, they become frogs.

The metamorphosis of a school system also is a complex process.  With an annual operating budget of $600 million, a public school system cannot be transformed in only three years.  However, the partners have made major strides using $6.8 million from NSF as leverage.  Through technology deployment, staff development, new staffing, resource realignment, and other actions, BUSI is changing behaviors and shifting attitudes.

Prior to BUSI, city elementary schools had few hands-on science and math materials. Teaching tools in the middle schools were old and often did not match the curriculum.  High school laboratories were outdated and supplies difficult to obtain. In all schools, access to technology was nearly non-existent.

During the past three years, BUSI has influenced resource reallocation toward math and science. All elementary schools now have materials for teaching the new science curriculum, STARS. All middle schools have microscopes. Nearly $3.7 million has been spent to renovate 25 laboratories in 9 high schools. BUSI funds purchased graphing calculators for high schools. More schools at all levels have adequate materials, and other resources for learning math and science. Finally, students and teachers are gaining the tools and technology for success.
