(Eta Omega Chapter)
Phi Alpha Theta is the National History Honors Society.* It's mission statement reads: "We are a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways"
Phi Alpha Theta has a conspicuous presence at Morgan State University. The chapter was until 2006 directed by Dr. Aubrey Thompson. Under the new advisor, the chapter will continue to organize interdisciplinary seminar for undergraduate and graduate students, participate in historical events such as the Africa Film Festival and the History Day Celebration.
Nationally, each year Phi Alpha Theta sponsors a meeting of chapters at which students present the fruits of their scholarly research. Papers are grouped into undergraduate and graduate divisions and within each group they are subdivided into those whose topics relate to American history and World history. Students from the Eta Sigma chapter are encouraged to attend regional meetings and present papers as well. The 2007 regional meeting will be at Washington College, Chestertown, Maryland on March 31st.
