PERFORMANCE
THE MUSIC
PERFORMANCE MAJOR-INSTRUMENTAL: The performance major in music requires
students to complete the following courses: MUSC 100-103, MUSC 135-136,
MUSC 171-172, MUSC 175, MUSC 187, MUSC 235-236, MUSC 271- 272, MUSC
281-282, MUSC 318, MUSC 357, MUSC 381-382, MUSC 449, MUSC 491, MUSC
492; Eight (8) semesters of ensemble in student's major performing
area; Eight (8) sequential semesters of private lessons in student's
major performing area. Piano proficiency examinations, junior and
senior recital are required prior to graduation. Students specializing
in piano are exempted from the MUSC 100-103 requirement
THE MUSIC PERFORMANCE
MAJOR-VOCAL: The vocal performance major requires students to complete
the following courses: MUSC 100-103, MUSC 135-136, MUSC 171-172,
MUSC 175, MUSC 187, MUSC 235-236, MUSC 271-272, MUSC 281-282, MUSC
318, MUSC 319, MUSC 357, MUSC 369-370, MUSC 449, MUSC 492; Eight
(8) semesters of ensemble in student's major performing area; Eight
(8) sequential semesters of private lessons in student's major performing

THE INSTRUMENTAL
MUSIC MAJOR: The instrumental music major requires students to complete
the following courses: MUSC 100-103, MUSC 135-136, MUSC 171-172,
MUSC 187-188, MUSC 235-236, MUSC 271-272, MUSC 281-282, MUSC 311,
MUSC 318, MUSC 333, MUSC 337, MUSC 343, MUSC 353, MUSC 357, MUSC
363, MUSC 449; Seven (7) semesters of university Band; Eight (8)
sequential semesters of private lessons in student's major performing
area. Piano proficiency examination, and all classes are to be completed
before student teaching. For teacher certification requirements,
students should contact the School of Education and Urban Studies.
THE VOCAL MUSIC
MAJOR: The vocal music major requires students to complete the following
courses: MUSC 100-103 (Not required of piano and organ majors),
MUSC 135-136, MUSC 171-172, MUSC 187-188, MUSC 235-236, MUSC 271-272,
MUSC 281-282, MUSC 318, MUSC 319, MUSC 346, MUSC 357, MUSC 373-374,
MUSC 449; Eight (8) semesters of voice lessons, in sequence, Seven
(7) semesters of university Choir. Piano proficiency examination,
and all classes are to be completed before student teaching. For
teacher certification requirements, students should contact the
School of Education and Urban Studies.
All music
majors are required to participate for credit in a major ensemble.
Music candidates for teacher certification must pass seven (7) semesters
of ensemble, and Performance majors must pass eight (8) semesters.
