THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To provide a curriculum that is designed to present the student with an understanding of the role of telecommunications in our society through courses that examine communications theory, telecommunications research and history;
  2. To offer a foundation for students interested in possible graduate study or employment in those areas which would require undergraduate training in telecommunications and public relations;
  3. To offer media laboratory experiences on campus in radio, video, electronic journalism, public relations and promotion;
  4. To provide workshops and internships which will allow students to fully understand the relationship between media theory and practice, as well as the interrelationships between the various mass media; and
  5. To offer the College of Liberal Arts and the university a curriculum which supports the mission of the institution, as well as the objectives of other programs and departments within the institution.

The Department of Telecommunications is devoted to preparing students for rewarding careers within the electronic media and public relations industries. Not only are students interested in positions in radio, television and broadcast journalism, they are also seeking employment in areas related to cable television, satellite communications, teleconferencing, telemarketing, corporate, education and government communication, as well as interactive video systems and newly emerging information technologies. Other career opportunities in the electronic media include positions that support communication outlets such as sales, marketing, finance, engineering, administration, fundraising, as well as advertising, public relations and consumer affairs. Students, through courses in management, law and programming, are encouraged to consider entrepreneurial career opportunities. Students in the program are exposed to verbal, visual, electronic and print communications through a series of classes related to communications theory and practice.

The Department supports undergraduate activities designed to give students an opportunity to create their own media projects. This includes an on-campus radio station where students conceive, write and perform material for broadcast, as well as learning tasks necessary for managing these stations.

Three student chapters of professional organizations - Alpha Epsilon Rho, the National Black Media Coalition, and the Association of Black Media Workers - are open to all students.

B.A./B.S. Degree Requirements

The Department offers both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree. The B.A. degree requires six (6) hours of a foreign language; the B.S. degree provides an opportunity for students to take a sequence of supporting courses in areas such as Computer Science.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS: A major in Telecommunications requires a sequence of fifty-four (54) hours. These hours are composed of courses, within the Department and outside of the Department, in areas such as Speech and English.
