University Honors Program
Scholarships

Introduction

The University provides a significant level of merit-based awards to a limited number of students. The number of scholarships we award is based on the amount of funds available. Honors Program scholarships are NOT entitlements and are awarded, for the most part, on a need-blind basis.

Each scholarship has a list of minimum qualifying requirements. Simply being qualified for a scholarship does not guarantee that you will receive it. We award some scholarships on a competitive basis and limit the number of recipients based on our available funds.

Each scholarship has a list of “specific requirements” that you must meet in order to remain in good standing. Generally, these requirements are consistent with your past academic performance and do not require you to maintain a standard of excellence that you have not previously demonstrated.

We make official scholarship offers via an award letter. The award letter notifies you of the type and amount of the scholarship and may include special stipulations that must be met (e.g. returning the form to our office before a certain date) and includes a specific requirements form. We require you to sign and return all required forms and meet all required specifications before we credit your account with the award funds. We will not accept any change(s) or edit(s) that you make on an award letter or specific requirements form.

We award scholarship funds for specifically designated educational costs (e.g., tuition & fees). We do not necessarily guarantee to pay the full amount of the cost. We coordinate scholarships with other public, private, and Institutional (Morgan State University) grants and scholarships that you receive in order to create a financial aid package. Therefore, the actual amount of funding you receive may vary from the initial amount we awarded you. Occasionally, we may award a “modified scholarship” that provides a higher/ lower level of funding and/or excludes a “perk” (e.g., book allowance or laptop/ notebook computer). You should consult your award letter to determine what and how much your scholarship awards and how long the scholarship lasts.

Sometimes, new rules, regulations, and/or directives may be instituted that amend the specific requirements of an award. We will notify you of any amendments to an agreement. When you accept an Honors Program funding scholarship, you agree to accept Honors Program amendments to the specific requirements of your scholarship upon notification. If you choose to decline any specific requirements amendment(s), you will forfeit your award at the end of the first semester during which the change(s) go into effect.

Over 65% of the students receiving Honors Program awards have a significant level of financial need based on federal government guidelines. The University and the Honors Program believe that you should make every effort to succeed, especially if your scholarship provides a level of funding that you and/or your family could not normally afford to pay. Although we try to maximize the amount of your funding, you may only receive one Honors Program scholarship (except a book award) at any given time.
