Objective
The student is expected to declare a major area for concentration under
the Master of Arts Degree Program, and to develop expertise and acquire
the information, skills and experiences necessary to make an independent
and original contribution to the profession.
Admission
to Program
For unconditional admission, applicants must have earned a minimum undergraduate
academic average of 3.0 in their major area of study and not less than
a 3.0 average overall. In addition, the applicant must present a minimum
of 49 semester hours in undergraduate music courses and hold a bachelor's
degree in some area of music. All applicants must be interviewed by
the Graduate Program Coordinator and meet the entrance requirements
specified in the Handbook for Graduate Music Students, available from
the office of the Graduate Program Coordinator.
For conditional admission,
applicants must have earned a minimum undergraduate academic average
of 2.5 and not less than 2.5 average overall. In addition, the applicant
must meet all other requirements specified above.
General
Requirements for Degree
At the beginning of their studies all students will prepare a program
of study in consultation with the Graduate Program Coordinator and submit
a copy to the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. However, all students
are required to complete the Common Core Curriculum of 20 credit hours.
Changes will be made only with departmental and Graduate School approval.
All students must pass
the departmental comprehensive examination prior to graduation. The
degree program requires a minimum of 33 credit hours.

The thesis requirement
may be satisfied in one of three ways:
- Writing a traditional
thesis on an approved topic or
- Writing an original
composition of major proportions and a paper concerning salient aspects
of the composition, or
- Presenting a recital
on the graduate level and writing a document relative to performance
or editorial decisions on an approved topic related to the recital
program.
