Soper Library, located on the upper portion of the south campus, serves
as a resource for all academic programs at the University. Soper Library
is named after Morris A. Soper, U.S. Circuit Judge from Maryland and Chairman
of the Morgan Board of Trustees. In 1937, Judge Soper headed a state commission
that studied the adequacy of higher education for African-Americans. Upon
the recommendation of the Commission, the State of Maryland purchased
Morgan and made it into a public institution in 1939.
