On September 15th, the School of Architecture and Planning hosted the annual AIA Maryland Design Awards in the University's Student Center Ballroom. Over 100 guests fellowshipped while listening to the sounds of the MSU Jazz Ensemble and feasting on the delicious food and drink serviced by Thompson Hospitality. During the evening, AIA Maryland awarded over 25 design awards to professionals and students.
Among the professional winners for the evening included Professors Gabriel Kroiz and Pavlina Ilieva for their Creative Alliance Cafe in southeast Baltimore. According to the design jury, "This (Creative Alliance Cafe) was a fun, but intense little project, in particular, the use of materials for the project - the reclaimed wood, the combination of the brick juxtaposing the concrete and then the vibrant mural against the rear."
As for the student awards, BSAED alumnus, Kordae Henry, received the undergraduate Student Design Award for his Orthodox Synagogue studio project. The design takes important artifacts and relics from the Jewish History to form and create a contemporary Jewish Synagogue. Some of the jury comments included, "It was very clear that the student (Kordae Henry) had done a lot of research and had a clear understanding of the different components of the program." Mr. Henry is currently enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania's Master of Architecture program.
We like to congratulate Gabriel Kroiz, Pavlina Ilieva, and Kordae Henry for their achievements and recognition!!!
