SANKOFA - An Adinkra word from the Akan people of Ghana West-Africa. It simply means:

“We must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward; So we understand why and how we came to be who we are today.”

The Sankofa Initiative

A Research Initiative conducted by the
Community College Leadership Doctoral Program

The research is being conducted by graduate students in the MSU-CCLDP. The MSU graduate students who are researchers for the initiative include: David Mosby, Wayne Beckles, Lorenzo Esters, and Michael Robinson. Consultants to the project include Dr. Irving Pressley McPhail and Drs. Irvin and Kadian Clark. The Sankofa Initiative is supervised by Dr. Christine Johnson McPhail, Director and Coordinator of the CCLDP.

The Sankofa Initiative was commissioned by Mr. Harold Williams, Trustee at Portland Community College and spokesperson for the African American Trustees Caucus of the Association of Community College Trustees.

We would welcome your suggestions of in-house studies or other documents that shed light on these issues. We look forward to your reactions to the Initiative and will share our findings via this website.
