Student Health Insurance
Morgan State University has partnered with Aetna Student Health to provide limited medical coverage for full-time undergraduate students (i.e., students pursuing 12 or more credits per semester). Through a managed care approach, Aetna student insurance works in conjunction with the University Health Center (UHC) at the Woolford Infirmary. The UHC serves as the primary care provider (PCP) while you are enrolled at Morgan. Through the Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan, you are covered during the school year even when you travel home or to another country,
How it Works
If you require medical attention, visit the UHC before you go to any other doctor, (unless it's an emergency). You pay nothing for services at the UHC for office/nurse visits, follow-up appointments, and most medications. These covered services are billed directly to Aetna. If it is necessary for you to be seen by a specialist, hospital, or clinic outside of the UHC, you must first obtain a written referral from a UHC provider. We have a network of preferred providers to deliver services to you that are not available in the UHC (i.e., x-rays, after-hours urgent care, surgery, and specialist consultation). Using Aetna's extensive Preferred Provider Network (PPN), we will refer you to participating physicians and medical providers who will help minimize your costs.
You are responsible for any costs that exceed the limits of the student insurance plan, and those you incur using providers outside of the PPN. Detailed information about the student insurance plan and a list of Preferred Providers can be obtained at www.aetnastudenthealth.com .
Coverage
Full-time undergraduate students (pursuing at least 12 credits each semester) are automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan, provided tuition and fees have been paid to the university. This service is paid for by your tuition and fees.
Part-time undergraduate or graduate students are not automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan, but are encouraged to purchase medical insurance by following the enrollment procedures outlined below. Although you may purchase insurance for spouses and dependents, they are not eligible to receive primary care services at the UHC. Students in this category must be taking at least 6 credits in every semester they enroll in the insurance plan. Graduate students in their last semester are exempted from this requirement, as long as they provide documentation from their Department Chair, stating that they need less than 6 credits to graduate.

Insurance Declination (Waiver)
As a result of the enactment of the Affordable Care Act in March 2010, young adults may be insured as a dependent on their parent's health insurance plan up to age twenty-six (26). Young adults may be eligible for coverage even if they are married, do not live with their parents, are not enrolled in as a full-time student, or are not claimed as dependents on their parent's tax returns.
If you are covered by health insurance (e.g., through family plans, or employer sponsored plans), you may decline MSU's student health insurance by completing a waiver form. However, waiving the student health insurance plan based on having primary insurance coverage elsewhere does not eliminate the fee. Because MSU's student health insurance is a group insurance plan, the fee is charged to your student account even if you waive it. The fee is non-refundable.
Declination Procedure:
•· Compare the benefits of your current health insurance and Aetna's student insurance plan with your family.
•· Download and complete the waiver form by the October 1st (fall semester), or March 1st (spring semester) whether or not tuition and fees have been paid. You will need your student identification number (SID), the name of your health insurer, the policy number, and the name of the policyholder.
•· Waiver forms may also be obtained from the UHC at the Woolford Infirmary, located between the Washington Service Center and Hughes Stadium.
•· Mail or bring the completed form to: University Health Center (Woolford Infirmary), 1700 East Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, MD 21251, or fax it to 443-885-8232. The UHC will notify Aetna of your decision to waive the insurance.
