"The Avenue Experience"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 19, 2010

Office of Student Activities presents "The Avenue Experience", A legacy of the Historical Heart of Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MD- January 13, 2010- From the 1920’s to the 1970’s, Pennsylvania Avenue was revered as the mecca of African American culture in the city of Baltimore. Located in the heart of the black community, “The Avenue” attracted the biggest names in black entertainment, business, and politics. Pennsylvania Avenue encapsulated the very essence of the bebop era as it was always lively-hustling and bustling with crowds as the scent of soul food from the countless restaurants, jazz clubs and lounges filled the air. It was a special time - “The Avenue” was truly a city within a city. In recognition of Black History Month, the Office of Student Activities at Morgan State University is sponsoring “The Avenue Experience,” hosted by WEAA 88.9FM’s Bill Harvey of The Magic Bird Show on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 7 p.m. in the University Student Center Theatre.

“The Avenue Experience” will consist of a variety of enriching entertainment including a storyteller, live dancers, and living legends of “The Avenue” era. Local historians and event producers, Willie and Zelma Ragsdale will also present archival photos and their research on Pennsylvania Avenue. The event is absolutely free and open to students, faculty, staff and the general public. Everyone is encouraged to come and share in this enchanting experience as this will be an event to remember for years to come!
